What will my students learn?

These resources will help your young learners use language to describe:

  • height
  • hair colour
  • hair style and length
  • eye colour
  • body shape
  • age
  • common accessories & features, e.g., glasses, earrings, beard, moustache/mustache

SEE the Preview for full details of the vocabulary and structures targetted.

Comprehensive Activity Suggestions provide lots of ideas for activities to do before and after, and also give you ideas for interactive ways to conduct the activities for effective language practice.

What are the resources?

  • Splat Mats!

5 sheets to check receptive understanding of the vocabulary and the difference between he and she. They are useful, especially for online or socially distanced classes, because they are easily projected on screen, or students can have their own copy of the mat(s). They also provide a useful change of dynamic from flashcard based activities.

  • Worksheets (Use with the audio files)

2 worksheets complete with audio to check understanding before moving onto more independent games, such as Guess Who or Go Fish. You’ll be able to identify the items that are still causing difficulty, and target them in follow-up games according to their needs.

  • 16 page mini-book
Make a fun mini-book from a single sheet of paper. Choose from 4 different template types to focus on the skills and language you want to practise:
    • pictures with text
    • pictures without text
    • match and stick pictures to text
    • blank templates to use with the cut and paste pictures or for students to write/draw their own pages

Kids can use it in other activities for language support. Watch my video for how to make a 16 page mini-book.

  • Flap books
Choose from 4 different templates to create a 4 person flap book. On the outside, the kids either draw their family/friends or choose a character set. On the inside, they stick description tabs with features to describe each person. A great way to personalise and activate the vocabulary, and help distinguish between different pronouns.

  • Folding craft

Children create a folding concertina of a character. They can draw someone from their own lives or use one of the characters provided. These would also make an attractive classroom display.

  • Clothes Guess Who?
Please note that this resource is also included in the Clothes Activity Pack.
Play the traditional Guess Who Game. Includes 4 boards of 25 children and 3 sheets of Guess Who playing cards, which could also be used as easier boards for lower levels. Use to practise physical description vocabulary, as well as clothes vocabulary.

  • Guess Who? Craft
Kids create their own version of the popular game to play in class and at home. Use the Ask, Listen and Draw sheets first, and then let kids work together to create their very own Guess Who boards.

  • Playing cards & craft
Print and play one of the suggested games, then get kids to make their own sets. There are two sets, each containing 16 cards. Within these sets, different templates allow you to practise different skills: cards with completed text; cards with gapped text; cards to be completed with the cut and paste pictures.

  • Mini-cards
Follow the Activity Suggestions for fun games and activities. There are 36 picture cards and corresponding text cards.

  • Flashcards
3 sets of engaging flashcards in A5 format: picture cards, text cards and photo cards. The picture and text cards are great for focusing on isolated features of physical description. The photo cards, are perfect for using the description language all together.

Please note that the files are included in a ZIP file. After downloading unzip with your favourite ZIP software.
