Kids listen to the audio and choose the corresponding picture from the Enormous Turnip Story. It’s a great way to recycle phrases and vocabulary from the story and build on oral comprehension skills.

The story images are out of order and the images are often quite similar so it really makes the children listen carefully to choose the right one. I’m always looking for ways to give my groups repeated exposure to story language and this is a fun way for them to get exactly that.

The audio is recorded in Scottish Standard English. The images are the same as those in The Enormous Turnip Digital Audio Story and The Enormous Turnip Activity Pack.

Apart from helping with the recognition of people and animal vocabulary, this deck also helps with the consolidation of useful structures and phrase. Other useful phrases that the kids can learn include: “Come and help!” and “The (turnip) doesn’t move”. It’s also a good version of the story to internalise sentence structures such as Subject, Verb, Object: “The (man) pulls the (turnip)” and simple reporting language: “he says”; “they say”; “….says (the girl)”. There are also some good basic examples of the present simple tense.
