The Enormous Turnip – Digital Story with Audio tells the popular story with adapted language, especially for EFL / ESL / EAL students or for beginning readers. Listen and read or read then listen to check.
This story is great for learning people vocabulary: man, woman, boy, girl and some animal/pet vocabulary: dog, cat, mouse. It’s great for language acquisition because the story is repetitive with each slide building on the previous one.
Other useful phrases that the kids can learn include: “Come and help!” and “The (turnip) doesn’t move”. It’s also a good version of the story to internalise sentence structures such as Subject, Verb, Object: “The (man) pulls the (turnip)” and simple reporting language: “he says”; “they say”; “….says (the girl)”. There are also some good basic examples of the present simple tense.
