Today I will fly!

Today I will fly! by Mo Willems has such positive messages of trying, never giving up and helping others.  The simple text and wonderful illustrations communicate the emotions and events perfectly. A great story for younger AND older learners.

This story is perfect for exploring themes such as friendship, ability, helping and accepting help from others. It is also really useful for clearly contextualising past, present and future verb tenses.

Teaching ideas

  1. Use the theatre script below to dramatise the story.
  2. Kids can invent new versions of the story. Change the characters or actions. It’s a great way to transfer the grammar to new contexts.
  3. Try mime games in pairs or small groups. One group mimes an action, e.g., ‘do karate’, and the other group guesses while using language from the story: ‘Today you will do karate!’
