Big Pumpkin
Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, illustrated by S. D. Schindler, is a fun, repetitive story that’s perfect for Halloween. With its memorable dialogue and cumulative structure, it’s great for encouraging children to join in, act out the story and predict what happens next.
EFL/ESL kids learn useful language through repeated phrases such as It’s big; It’s mine; I’m bigger; I’m stronger; and Let me try. They can also practise language for making suggestions, offering help and describing characters and actions.
The story offers opportunities for exploring cooperation and problem-solving as the characters discover that working together is the key to success.

Pass the Pumpkin game song
Instead of pass the parcel, play ‘Pass the Pumpkin’! Everyone sits in a circle. When the music is on, the children pass a real or toy pumpkin. When they hear ‘Boo!’, they stop and they have to do an action, say the name of a character from the story, or win a small prize.
