What will my ESL young learners learn?
Apart from the individual kitchen objects, food and halloween items, you can also use the cards to focus on other structures and phrases from the story, including ‘will’ for prediction. For example:
What’s in the …. in the witch’s kitchen?
Open it left or open it right,
Will you like what you see? Will it give you a fright?
Will you want to shout YUCK? Will you cheer with delight?
Vocabulary items in the story:
kitchen + home: house, fridge, bowl, teapot, tin, toaster, cupboard, jar, door
yucky food + halloween: rabbit plops, skeleton, ghost, spiders, snakes, goblin’s wee, frog spawn, bats, fleas
yummy food: lollipops, beans, macaroni cheese, tomato soup, tins of food, toast, biscuits, cakes, cheese, popcorn, tea
Extra vocabulary for story extension:
kitchen + home: blender, oven, pan, microwave, pot, cauldron
yucky food + halloween: pumpkin, eyeballs, owl, slime, worms, beetles
yummy food: bananas, grapes, rice, pasta, icecream, carrots

Yes, of course! Maybe you have the time and enjoy creating things, but it has to be said that being a young learner teacher can involve a HUGE amount of extra work making materials. Even searching for appropriate images can take forever. Give yourself a break!

Yes! With lower levels you may choose to work on a fewer number of items at a time, and with higher levels you can stretch them with the whole gambit.
These card sets aren’t designed to be used for a whole lesson, but they can certainly be used across a complete series of lessons on the story. You can even use them in other topic based lessons.

Loads of games can be played with these cards, both in a classroom and in one to one lessons. Depending on the kids’ ages the text cards can be used or omitted. I only used half to begin as there are many.
It’s great that there’s something to print on the back of the cards so the front isn’t visible when they’re face down.
Some Bingo boards might be a good addition to these cards!

What's in the kitchen flashcards
I used Fiona’s flashcards to introduce the book and the students absolutely loved the matching game where each student receives one half of the flashcard.
Apart from learning and memorising the vocabulary, they also get to read the sentences and practice the verb To be without realising.
This is a great resource!
